Medical Imaging and DICOM Applications Development

DICOM is the defined data structure and communication standard for creating, storing, printing, and transmitting medical imaging information and associated patient and clinical data.

PACS Imaging Systems

A PACS system typically contains 1. Patient database 2. DICOM Server (SCP & SCU) 3. Image viewer 4. Image Import, Export & Reporting. The DICOM server receives & stores Images sent from Imaging hardware or other Imaging modality whereas the Viewer displays studies with various Imaging filters, reports, annotation tools. The choice of platform could be cloud based system, or desktop based system with web viewer, or an off-line system.

Nuclear Medicine (PET & SPECT)

Cancer Imaging Program or Nuclear Imaging relies on tiny radioactive substances linked to compounds used by the cells or compounds that attach to tumours. PET scan creates computerized images of chemical changes, whereas SPECT uses radioactive tracers & a scanner to record data that are computed into 2d or 3D images. Image filtering, mathematical processing compensates loss of detail in an image while reducing noise correlation.

DICOM Structured Reporting (SR)

DICOM SR is the standard for structured data and clinical observations in Medical Imaging. DICOM SR shows diagnostic report, Multi-level structure, Text, codes, Encoding for structured observations & reports - Key object selection, CAD, US measurements, Patient QR, SR Intent - measurements by Imaging devices, enable links to key images, enable links to regions of interest, within images & web forms, template-driven content and structure.

For past one decade we created different DICOM implementations, covering most of the diagnostic imaging modality such as CT, MR, Ultrasound, NM, X-ray, CR, DR, DX including integration between RIS/MWL Server & PACS systems. We published DICOM Images over browsers, linking Medical Imaging Info to HIMS/EMRs.

DICOM Image Burning, Archiving, and Disc Label Printing

DicomBurn is a operator-less DICOM CD Burning and Disc Publishing application, we developed and published at Imaging PACS. DicomBurn application archives DICOM studies to USB Drives, CD, DVD and Blu-ray discs. Options include CD label printing, automatically acquiring imaging and clinical information. 1. DICOM CD Burner 2. DICOM Disc Publisher 3. DICOM USB Burner

DICOM Image Printing and DICOM File Conversions

DICOM Images can be printed over specialised DICOM Printers. The expensive Film printing can be replaced by Windows paper printing with customized Print-SCPs. DICOM files can be converted to Jpeg images (lossless, JPEG2000 encoding), be viewed or printed on PC printers. DICOM conversions are essential for IHE-PDI profile compliance (Portable Data for Imaging).

DICOM data segments are the equivalent of data sequence in HL7. Tags for patient details, clinical info, observations, diagnosis, procedures and the Imaging data sequence with pixel info. Routing DICOM communication to a specific Radiologist, or rule based DICOM Image processing, publishing, and creating compatibility between EMR & PACS systems via DICOM-HL7 bridge are all possible.

DICOM Routers and Automated Image Processing

DICOM routers can store and forward Medical Images or DiCOM communication, automates the ingestion and distribution of imaging studies on rule based methods. pre-fetch and archive studies in either a web PACS or more traditional PACS environments. Part of a DICOM router or Stand-alone automated image processing utility helps classifying, tagging or applying pre-defined imaging filters.

DICOM - HL7 broker and PACS - EMR - RIS bridge

HL7 CDA and DICOM SR can be combined for advanced reporting or other HL7 Imaging Integrations. A HL7-DICOM Broker application can translate the HL7 messaging into DICOM, enabling RIS integration with HL7 based healthcare information systems. DICOM - HL7 integrated bridge viewer can help content-based image retrieval to computer-aided diagnosis.
